Quick Review

Jannat - An engrossing watch which raises some philosophical questions. A story well told but yet doesn’t warrant a trip to the theaters.

Plot Summary

Arjun (Emraan Hashmi) a reckless, irresponsible gambler falls in love with Zoya (Sonal Chauhan). While he woos her, he willingly gets more and more involved with the cricket-match-fixing network. Ideologies clash and we get a movie to watch.

What worked

  • The way Arjun’s character is established in two scenes, the opening one and the first one with Zoya.
  • Loved the way two matches where Virendra Sehwag gets out are chosen.

What didn’t

Note: This section simply lists the things that I did not like in this movie. This is not the overall impression about this movie. Please read the full review here
  • How come there were no red marks made by the cricket ball on the bowlers trousers even at the end of the game? Hmmm…maybe he was bowling his first over!
  • How come all wrong-doers were Muslims, other than Arjun and Vishal?
  • That was a pretty huge house they were staying in when they were complaining about not having enough money!
  • Why exactly did they keep the hotel room door open while conducting such secretive business!?!

Nitty-Gritty

This section lists things that I think are not important to the overall impact of the movie. In most cases, it could be explained away by something like, “we noticed the glitch after the scene was shot and there were schedule/budget issues and thus we could not re-shoot it”. I like giving the makers the benefit of doubt, but I am amused nevertheless. Hopefully, they will tickle you too.
  • How can anyone be so unaware of someone else staring at them the way Arjun was staring Zoya is beyond me.
  • They couldn’t get a decent bundle of 500 Rupee notes? Did they really have to wrap white paper so visibly with two 500 notes on each side?
  • Why was Arjun wooing Zoya with a speaker phone on in the middle of a road?!
  • The newsreader towards the end of the movie was awful!
  • If someone has been brutally shot to death, wouldn’t his shirt have holes in it?!

In reference to this point: “Why exactly did they keep the hotel room door open while conducting such secretive business!?!”

It wasnt the Hotel room where the scene was taking place, it was the Lobby. This is all the more idiotic, why would someone choose a place so common for a such a criminal act!!

Aasim, the scene started off in the lobby and then the actual deal happened in a room, the door of which was open.

How come arjun did not stash a significant section of his loot, as most criminals. That way he would not have to be working as a measly bar boy after after he goes clean

That is correct. The movie has been abruptly shut off. And don’t think the climax was something out of this world. It is a direct lift from a english movie (Vishesh Films, after all), and even then I wondered why that guy was killed, and even in Jannat I wonder why Arjun was killed. If they would have added half an hour of Arjun, Zoya, the Police officer and that friend of Arjun fooling the don, it would have become a great film. But why wrack your brains when there’s a English DVD to copy?

And yes, the guy who played the coach, as well as the newsreporter in the end were god awful. The reporter was actually prancing her eyes around!

Forget about closed hotel doors when watching a Emraan Hashmi film. Do you remember The Train?, where Emraan Hashmi and the chick are doing it and the hotel room door is open? Well, it had to be open, the entire story of the movie depends on that.
